Assembling Urban Compost Tumblers

The urban compost tumbler comes in many different shapes, sizes and colors. While they are all fairly easy to erect and assemble sometimes a detailed explanation is worthwhile.

Some of the compost bin tumbler designs are easier than others to put together. The urban compost tumbler is not going to take long to put together and once it has been erected it will be time to begin making some of the quickest compost you have ever made. Although I cannot show videos for every compost tumbler I thought it would be worth taking a look at how one of them is put together.

Urban Compost Tumbler Assembly ( Video)

As we can see assembling the Tumbleweed Urban Compost Tumbler is fairly straightforward and requires little in the way of tools.

It should not take very long and this is as good a model as any in which to show how to assemble the tumbling composter. The Tumbleweed is a very good model and if you want to read more about it you can click on the black compost bin tumbler as it scrolls down on the left.

What is so great about so many compost tumbler designs is their simplicity. Who wants to spend days putting one together when really you just want to begin composting?

When it comes to choosing an urban compost tumbler it may well be worth reading some reviews, which you can by clicking on any of the tumblers, and seeing which one is the easiest to assemble.

Urban Compost Tumbler Benefits

When it comes to making compost the urban compost tumbler is difficult to beat for many reasons. The urban compost tumbler has quite a few distinct advantages over many of the more conventional means of composting, and for the initial outlay that the compost bin tumbler requires, you get a very good return in a short space of time.

The benefits of the urban compost tumbler are not only down to the speed with which you can make compost, there are many other composting benefits as well. Let's take a look at the many benefits to the home composter.

Benefits Of The Urban Compost Tumbler

So, how does the urban compost tumbler compare to normal composting techniques?

Urban compost tumblers make compost much quicker.

There is absolutely no doubt that if used correctly the urban compost tumbler can make compost in a few weeks once it is full. There is no way that you can get these results making compost the conventional way. Anyone who wants compost quickly would do well to get a composting tumbler as soon as possible.

Urban compost tumblers require less work.

Although I am opposed to it if you turn conventional compost piles then you can speed up the composting process. I am against it because it is so much work for the return you get. It really is backbreaking. With the compost bin tumbler you don't have the backbreaking work. It is a simple matter of turning a handle or rotating the drum to thoroughly mix the contents. The even distribution of heat will dramatically speed up the process and this is why it is so efficient at quickly making compost.

The urban compost tumbler is neater.

A normal compost bin can be quite untidy. Especially if you are like me and make your composting bins out of free materials. They can look untidy and messy, especially if you don't have somewhere to hide it out of the way. With the urban compost tumbler they look good wherever they are sited. They are neat and compact and actually look good.

They are not an eye sore at all. They can actually enhance a garden, especially some of the more space age designs that are available. The colors are pleasing to the eye as well as helping to speed up the whole composting process.

The urban compost tumbler keeps animals and rodents away.

Dogs, Cats and rodents can be a bit of a problem for many composters. Because of their design they are often open to the elements which means that they can be infiltrated by animals. The tumbler is a mostly sealed unit which means that these pests cannot get at the contents and leave a mess all over the garden. It is a problem I have with an open compost heap but one that can be avoided with a tumbler compost bin.

There is nothing worse than having animals ruin a compost heap. They can disturb all the contents which will set back the composting time. This won't happen with a sealed unit.

Compost bin tumblers are ideal for smaller spaces or occasional composters.

As well as being ideal for fairly large scale composting operations they are also perfect for those without much space. The design means that they take up little room whilst still making excellent compost. They are available in all manner of sizes and there is one suited to everyones wishes. They are also perfect if you do not actually have much composting matter on a regular basis.

What you do have can be added as and when without it taking up much room. It can be sited somewhere unobtrusive and just used when needed.

So, in conclusion there are many benefits to the urban compost tumbler. It is ideal for so many different reasons.

Urban Compost Tumblers

Writing about urban compost tumblers brings up a few interesting points for discussion. People are still very dubious about the claims that you can make compost in 2-3 weeks. I think the misunderstanding comes about because some people who have been composting for decades simply say that it isn't possible. This misunderstanding is easily cleared up.

When we talk about making compost in such a short space of time we are talking about once the rotating composter has been filled. It is not going to make compost in that short space of time from the moment you start using it. Once you have filled it with suitable composting materials then it is only a matter of weeks before you can use it on garden. Obviously the quicker you can fill it the better. Use lots of good quality soft organic matter and once it is filled you will not have long to wait. This will beat a conventional compost bin by a matter of months. Urban compost tumblers are almost miraculous in the speed that they make compost but you still have to be realistic in your expectations.

The better the quality of the materials you add and the more you use the composting tumbler as you should, the better the results will be.

How To Use Urban Compost Tumblers Effectively

To get the most out of your urban compost tumblers you need to ensure that you use it in the best possible way. This will mean that you should always add good quality materials to it. By this I mean no woody are hard to break down materials. These will increase the time it takes for the contents to compost.

You should ensure the contents are always damp but not sodden. Without adequate moisture no organic materials are going to compost quickly. If the contents are too wet they will also take longer to compost and you will have some very bad smelling contents.

Site the rotating compost bin somewhere warm and sunny. The extra heat from the Sun will bring the contents up to a higher temperature and ensure that the contents break down as quickly as possible. If you do this just ensure the contents always stay moist.

The most important thing to remember however is to actually rotate the drum. This is the main design feature but something that many owners fail to do on a regular basis. Urban compost tumblers need to be tumbled or turned three times a week or more. By ensuring that you regularly mix up the contents you will get the maximum benefit from the rotating compost bin. The churning of the contents is the key to quick compost.

It keeps everything at an even hot temperature ensuring maximum speed of compost making. Achla CMP-05 Spinning Horizontal Composter as i have already stated is my compost tumbler of choice. Because it is horizontal it makes the turning of the contents much easier and the easier it is the more inclined you will be to do it.

You must ensure that you mix up the contents regularly. It is the even distribution of heat that makes the compost so quickly. The mixing also breaks up the contents in to small pieces. The smaller the contents are the quicker they will turn in to compost. If you use the composting tumbler as you should then you will get compost in a matter of weeks. The addition of the compost activator will also help to speed up the process quite a bit. At the very least you should add some rich garden soil to help the process along.

Follow these guidelines for the urban compost tumblers and you will get very good compost in a very short space of time.

The Rotating Composter

The rotating composter, or compost bin tumbler is fast becoming the best composter for many people. I think that a lot of this is simply down to the convenience of these composting tumblers. The rotating composter is simply so easy to use and so efficient at what it does that the conventional composting bin is being overlooked in favor of something that is cleaner and actually pretty good to look at.

If you want to purchase one at a low price then you can click the image to the right. The image to the left is for the Achla which is the one I really do recommend. The horizontal models simply make turning the contents so much easier and is by far the best selling rotating composter.

What I wanted to look at today is exactly how the rotating composter can make compost so quickly. What is it about the design that makes the compost in 2-3 weeks? Yes they really can make compost that quickly. It was certainly a surprise to me, but there are numerous people who have confirmed it can be done in such a short space of time.

How Does The Rotating Composter Work So Fast?

Let's take a look at exactly how the compost bin tumbler can work so quickly. I am still amazed at the speeds in which they create compost and it is good to know exactly how this happens. Bear in mind, this is probably more for the proper sized rotating composters and not for very small versions which are often little more than a container, although they also seem to work extremely quickly.
As we can see from the diagram, part of the reason why the rotating composter works so efficiently is because of a steady air flow. A good supply of air is what keeps the contents activated and constantly changing.

Add to this the fact that we turn the handle regularly to rotate the whole drum. This rotating of the drum chops up the contents and evens out the temperature. It also stops the contents from compacting which means the air can flow even better.

The constant tumbling really does make a large difference to the speed with which the compost tumbler works. The chopping up and even temperature allows the organic materials inside to break down at an astonishingly fast rate.

Of course, to get the best results you need to ensure that you only add good quality organic materials to the urban compost tumbler. Adding woody greens or anything that is not fairly soft to begin with will definitely slow down the rate of decomposition. Make the compost quickly by just using nice soft materials. A compost activator will also speed up the process considerably as well.

These are just some of the reasons why the compost tumbler seems so efficient at making quality compost in such a short space of time. Lots of good air flow will definitely help to make the compost quicker. If you get a rotating composter that doesn't have this feature don't despair. The actual tumbling motion goes a very long way to making compost very quickly. The churning helps to break down the contents very quickly. Also the fact that it is a mostly enclosed compost bin will mean that the moisture content stays high which is very important. See the urban compost tumbler post for more information on where to site the rotating composter to ensure that you get even better results.

The rotating composter is a fairly simple design really but one that is very efficient at what it does. If you haven't yet purchased one click on one of the images on the left and you can browse lots of other rotating composters on Amazon, who have by far the best prices on the web.

Urban Compost Tumbler

Here at urban compost tumbler I am gradually looking at all aspects of the compost bin tumbler. I now want to turn my attentions to where the urban compost tumbler should be sited. Siting a tumbling compost bin may not seem like a very important topic, but if you want to take full advantage of the fast speed that the tumbling compost bin can create compost, the siting of it is very important.

It is well worth considering this carefully before you begin to fill the composting tumbler as many of the models will be very difficult to move once they have begun to be filled. Apart from an aesthetic point of view, there are a few other factors that should determine exactly where you place your urban compost tumbler. We shall get to those in a minute. First I want to give a few tips on what are the best rotating compost bins.

When choosing a compost tumbler always go for a dark color if possible. Black or dark green composting tumblers are the best as they will absorb more heat and therefore the contents will turn in to compost that much more quickly.

Also, as stated previously, ensure you get a model that is suitable for you. If you are of a small or petite build then you may find a horizontal model will make your life much easier. The horizontal composting tumbler will be much easier to rotate, which is at the heart of how the tumbling composter works.

Now, on to the siting of the rotating compost bin:

Where To Site An Urban Compost Tumbler

Whether or not you are new to composting, you are probably as surprised as I was when I first discovered how quickly the compost bins for urban or country settings can produce compost. They really can create it very fast indeed, if given the right conditions. I have already stated what I think is the best composter, especially for the money, so lets see how we can get the most out of this, or any other urban compost tumbler.

  • Convenience is always an issue. Weigh up the different ways in which you use the tumbling compost bin and site it accordingly. If you primarily fill it from kitchen scraps then site it near to the kitchen. If it is primarily filled with waste vegetable matter from the garden or veg plot then it may be better sited close to those areas. It is simple considerations like this that make our work easier. The abundant earth site has some very good pointers about the use of the urban compost tumbler if you would like even more information. Decide on this in advance and place your urban compost tumbler as close to the main source of your organic waste as possible.
  • As well as taking the previous point in to consideration, try to combine it with this siting tip if at all possible. PLACE IT IN THE SUN. Composting always happens quicker at higher temperatures. This is part of the reason why the comost tumbler makes compost so quickly. Every time you rotate it you are spreading the heat that builds up when matter decays evenly. A high temperature will activate the contents quickly. If you can place your rotating compost bin somewhere nice and warm it will compost quicker. If you place it in a densely shaded area the contents will be much cooler and will take longer to turn in to quality compost. There really will be a marked difference. Keep the contents warm by siting the compost tumbler somewhere where it can at least get partial sun when it is available and it will work a lot quicker. Low temperatures, such as in winter, will slow down the composting rate, so it is especially important to site it in a sunny spot at the cooler times of the year.
These few simple points, often overlooked, may mean the difference between your urban compost tumbler being a very quick way of making compost, or a purchase that you are not getting the maximum benefit from. Make your life easy by siting the urban compost tumbler near to your source of organic waste and in a nice sunny spot.

The Best Composters

Just recently I wrote about what I though was the best composter as far as urban compost bin tumblers are concerned and they without doubt are the best composters by a large margin. The post, entitled the best urban compost tumbler has got me to thinking a bit more about the best composter. I have always been a strict traditionalist when it comes to my composting. I make my composting bins out of whatever I can lay my hands on. Bits of wood, chicken wire etc, basically anything and everything. As we have an awful lot of land we also have room for a lot of compost bins. We add an awful lot of materials and need a lot of room while the organic matter turns in to a nice friable mix.

I know, however, that this is not everyones situation. Many people have a relatively small amount of land, or do not have masses of matter to compost. This is where the rotating compost bin comes in. I have already written about how quickly they will create compost, and also that they are a much tidier arrangement if you have to make compost where the composting bin can be seen. What I will touch on today is choosing the best composter out of the myriad different rotating compost bins that are available. Previously I wrote that as far as I am concerned the Achla CMP-05 Spinning Horizontal Composter is much better than the vertical units because it will be much easier to spin. It is also very competitively priced and is the best selling urban compost tumbler on Amazon. Lets look at what else would make the best composter.

The Best Composter

urban compost tumblerSo, I already stated that for a good price the Achla is my choice. The fact that it is horizontal simply makes it easier to use if you are of a slight build or worry about turning a composting tumbler as it gets full. There are a few other reasons why this seems like such a good tumbling composter but it applies to others as well. That is the color.

If you can, especially in cooler climates, try to get a composter that is black. This color will absorb the heat from the sun and will aid the composting process. This extra heat will do nothing but good. If you do get a black compost bin tumbler I would ensure that you keep the contents moist. You may find out that the extra heat will mean it dries out a little more quickly inside. Just check on it regularly, maybe as you are about to rotate it to churn up the contents. It is a simple matter of adding a little extra water, or, my preference is to add some of the water that you wash the dishes with. This way you will save water and be adding the nutritious contents that come of the dirty dishes to your composter.

The best composters will always be a dark color if possible, dark green or black is always preferable over a light color, and if it may be difficult for you to turn a vertical urban compost tumbler, try a horizontal one for ease of use.

The Best Compost Tumblers

I seem to be thinking about the urban compost tumbler quite a lot lately. I think it is just because I am still amazed at just how quickly they can make compost. I was very dubious indeed about the claims that you could make compost in 2-3 weeks with a composting tumbler. I investigated these claims thoroughly and wrote about them in the compost bin tumbler post. I also touched briefly on what seemed to be the best rotating compost bin as well. I did not give it a thorough investigation though, and that is what I will be looking at today.

Although some of the compost tumblers are very cheap, some can also be quite a bit of an expense and I want to make sure that what is purchased is of the best quality and well worth the money. In my usual manner I have spent way too much time trying to find the best tumbling composter I can, you can save yourself some time by reading on. I will break it down in to two sections. The best urban compost tumbler on a budget and the best composting tumbler overall, without money being the main consideration. If you are looking to purchase one of these so you can get super quick compost then have a read and then start composting.

The Best Urban Compost Tumbler By Price

tumbling composterAfter having searched the web for reviews and price comparisons I have come to a conclusion. Although many tumbling composters have very good reviews there is one drawback to some of them. It is that the drum is vertical. For most people this is not an issue, but for some people once they are quite full it may be hard to rotate them with total ease. This turning or rotating is at the core of why they are so effective at making compost. If you have any doubts that you will be easily able to spin the drum then I have found the perfect answer. It is the Achla CMP-05 Spinning Horizontal Composter. For me this design wins hands down. It is on a horizontal axis so there is absolutely no effort involved in turning it to aerate the contents and speed up the composting process. Also, not surprisingly it is the number one best seller on Amazon under the compost bins section. It must be very popular, and I can see why.

At such a low price it is also one of the cheapest on the market. It is heavily discounted so now is definitely the time to buy it. If I had a budget but still wanted a very high quality tumbling compost bin then this is what I would definitely buy.

The Best Overall Urban Compost Tumbler Regardless Of Price

I touched on this model briefly in the composting tumbler post. It is the Mantis 4000-00-02 ComposT-Twin Composting Bin. Again it spins on a horizontal axis so it is very easy to turn and can be used by anyone. The main advantage I see is the fact that it has two chambers. This means you can fill one up and while you are waiting a few weeks for your compost you can start filling the second chamber. Now, it is not cheap at $500 but this is the only drawback to it.

If price was no object I would certainly purchase this model. However, there is another thing to consider but that depends on the space you have available. That option is to buy two of the Achla horizontal model. It would still be cheaper than buying this dual chamber model. The problem with this is the room that would be needed. I think if room was not an issue I would probably go with this option, but it does seem a little over the top. I think the dual chamber model is definitely the best option if you have the money.

As I wrote previously, before thinking that it is too expensive, consider how much a year you spend on potting soil and compost etc in bags. You may find that the more expensive model will still pay for itself in a few years. These urban compost tumblers are definitely as good as the manufacturers say they are. For very quick compost I would certainly at least purchase the cheaper tumbler compost bin.

The Urban Compost Tumbler

In the post titled Urban Compost Bin Tumblers we learnt just how effective the urban compost tumbler can be. We then looked at the compost bin tumbler to see just what the advantages were over a traditional compost bin, and, surprisingly for me, there are quite a few. The tumbling compost bin is very effective at what it does, and that is make compost very quickly indeed.

I now want to turn my attentions in a little more detail to just what is right to put in a compost bin tumbler and are they worth the money. I touched on it briefly but if you are going to make compost in record time, and by that we are talking about 2-3 weeks, then you need to be quite precise about just what you put in the composting tumbler. There are a few things to bear in mind, but most importantly from my research is that if you want super fast quality compost you must use a compost activator. They are part of the reason why you can produce compost at such amazing speeds, but not the only reason.

What To Add To An Urban Compost Tumbler

If you want to use your compost bin tumbler to full effect then you must limit what you put inside. The better quality the materials and the better suited they are to composting rapidly, then the quicker you will have your compost. Here is what you should be adding:
  • Grass
  • Leaves
  • Coffee grounds
  • Tea bags
  • Vegetable waste
  • Weeds
  • Rotten fruits excluding citrus
  • Small amounts of poultry manure
  • All organic peelings

As you can see anything that is soft and organic in nature is ideal. The finer the better as the urban compost tumbler will start turning it in to compost that much sooner. A tumbling composter works best if you can add matter that will break down as quickly as possible.

From years of experience with traditional composting bins I know that the finer the matter and the softer it is, the quicker it turns in to a crumbly compost mix. For very rapid compost you must limit yourself to these type of materials.

What Not To Add To A Tumbling Composter

As just stated, for fast compost from your composting tumbler you must use soft and small organic matter for maximum speed of results. Here is what you should not add to the tumbling composter:
  • Anything woody
  • Any thick stems of vegetables such as cabbage
  • Any very dry matter such as straw
  • Thick dense materials like hair
  • Any fabrics
  • Cardboards (especially coated ones)

You just need to think how much longer anything too dense or coarse will take to break down. The finer it is the better, and the coarser it is the longer the time it takes to return to compost like matter. If you can stick to making sure you only add very fine organic matter when possible then you can make compost in a matter of weeks with an urban compost tumbler.

Is The Urban Compost Tumbler Worth The Money?

tumbling composterI am always loathe to spend money when I don't need to. I have happily been composting for years using traditional methods. I thought my methods would never change. If you have been reading these articles then you can probably see I have changed my mind. I was dubious about the claims and I wanted to do a thorough investigation in to whether or not they were founded. I am very sceptical, especially when it comes to parting with my money.

Have I changed my mind? Yes. I am thoroughly convinced by my research that the tumbler compost bin does indeed live up to its reputation. There are loads of reviews and all pretty much confirming the claims. I really do believe that they are worth the money. This is why I have written this site. To give an unbiased opinion on what they are about and to see what I could find out about them. All the research has led to the fact that if you use them correctly the compost bin tumbler will make compost very quickly. Added to this is the fact they are nice and compact, they will not make a mess of the surrounding are, as a compost heap often does, and very importantly, they are not as expensive as I imagined. The basic models are very reasonable indeed.

If you ever purchase bags of potting compost or have to import organic matter then I would certainly buy one. Will I purchase one? Absolutely. For a quick compost fix in times of composting shortages, these tumbling composters would be a fantastic resource for me. For those with an average area of land they will be all that you need. I have added various buttons and images so you can go direct to amazon and read about them and decide which one you would like. Check out the urban compost tumbler reviews and pick one that is best suited to your needs.

Happy composting.

Compost Bin Tumbler

In the previous post on the urban compost tumbler we looked at how surprisingly quickly the compost bin tumbler can make compost. I was very dubious about the claims that the rotating compost bin can produce a fine compost ready for use within a matter of 2-3 weeks. It seems that you really can. Considering with a conventional compost bin it takes a matter of months, this is an extremely rapid process indeed. Read moer about whether I think they are good value for money in the post the urban compost tumbler.

What Are The Benefits Of The Compost Bin Tumbler?

There seem to be numerous benefits to using a rotating compost bin. The end result being of course that you can make compost so quickly. Lets take a closer look at how the benefits of a tumbler compost bin stack up.

The Compost Bin Tumbler Is Cleaner

Conventional compost bins, normally made out of recycled materials, can be messy. A large pile of decomposing vegetable matter can be off putting to some people. Personally I have never been too concerned. This is probably due to the amount of land space I have. The compost bins are never too close to be much of an eye sore. For those with limited space, or who like everything to look much tidier then an urban compost tumbler is probably the answer.

The Urban Compost Tumbler Is Compact

Whether you want a vertical or a horizontal compost bin tumbler they all have one thing in common. They are nice and compact. Ideal for putting in a corner of the garden, they will take up very little room in comparison to a conventional compost bin. You can put a surprising amount of waste material in to a rotating compost bin. A 200 litre bin, such as the Tumbleweed Composter will hold a quite vast quantity of materials.

Perfect for hiding away in a corner, or even on view, these tumblers are quite pleasing aesthetically.

A Compost Bin Tumbler Saves Money

For many, the option of having a compost heap in the conventional sense is simply not a very viable option. Lack of space or the problem of animals and rodents may simply mean it is not practical. To this end, many gardeners end up purchasing bags of soil to use in the garden or for potting plants. These bags soon add up in value. If you add up the cost over a year or two it is surprising how much you can spend.

By purchasing a compst bin tumbler, especially the Achla CMP-05 Spinning Horizontal Composter you will be saving money very quickly. I mention this product as it may be the best for some people. Which brings me to the next advantage.

An Urban Compost Tumbler Saves You Energy And Time

urban compost tumblerWith a normal compost bin it is recommended that you periodically turn the heap to activate it quicker. This is not something I ever do as the effort need simply is not worth getting compost a few weeks sooner. With a compost bin tumbler, especially the horizontal one just mentioned, it is the simplest thing in the world to turn your compost.

It is simply a matter of turning of a handle or a quick spin and you have mixed the contents very effectively. No effort and it takes no time to do.

Composting Tumblers-The Main Advantage

By far the main advantage of a compost bin tumbler is the speed in which you can make compost. Once the bin is filled you can turn the tumbler every few days with ease and get compost very rapidly. It will be a matter of two to three weeks only. To me this is still astounding but all the composting tumbler reviews confirm that this is how long it takes.

Summary

In conclusion there are many benefits to the urban compost tumbler over conventional heaps. This is especially so for those with limited space or dislike the untidy aspects and hazards of conventional piles.

Urban Compost Bin Tumblers-Composting Tumblers

I live with plenty of space around me and use a traditional method of composting. This involves having three large compost bins that are made out of wooden pallets. We continually add to one of the compost heaps until it is full. Then we move on to the next and so forth. Normally it takes a minimum of three months before we can then use the compost from the first heap.

I always thought that this was more than reasonable and much quicker than most who make their own compost. Lately, however, I have been hearing more and more about the compost bin tumbler which really is the best value composter. In an effort to find out about these tumbling composter machines I started to do a little research. This started because I had heard that with an urban compost tumbler you can have very good compost in only a matter of weeks! Claims run from only 14 days to 21 days. Either way, if true it is extremely fast. Follow this post as I explain what I have learnt about the compost bin tumbler, where to buy them, how efficient they are and can you really make GOOD compost in 14 days! Don't forget to read more about the urban compost bin tumbler in the next post, and all about what to add to the composting tumbler, and if they are good value for money in the post the urban compost tumbler.

Urban Compost Tumblers

How do they work?

Compost bin tumblers are efficient at producing compost quickly because of the ease of mixing the contents. Each time the tumbling composter is turned it mixes the contents, thus increasing the speed of decomposition. By mixing regularly the contents will get much more uniformly hot which turns the contents in to great compost at a much faster rate.

compost bin tumblerThe Compost bin tumbler, like traditional heaps, works by easily and efficiently aerating the contents. One thing I have found is that to make them super efficient and to speed up the process you should add a compost activator.
You can purchase these from a number of stores. I have never used these, but if they mean you can get compost in 14-21 days then I certainly think they are well worth the money. For the price of a small bag of potting soil they are more than worth the money. The Organica® Compost Activator has good reviews and if you can get an organic compost activator then I strongly suggest you do.

What To Add To A Composting Tumbler?

As these urban compost tumblers are designed to rapidly create compost it is advised that you only use soft clippings and cuttings and easily broken down materials. If you add anything too woody then it will drastically increase the time taken to produce very good compost. The ideal elements to add to a tumbling composter are:
  • Grass clippings
  • Leaves
  • Weeds
  • Kitchen waste
  • Any soft green organic matter

composting tumblerBy only using soft green organic matter the process works much quicker. You should also add a little bit of garden soil to get the microbes and bacteria working quickly although everything I have read so far recomends using the compost activator we just talked about.

What To Do With A Compost Bin Tumbler

Looking in to urban compost tumblers they seem remarkably easy to use. It is simply a matter of rotating the drum every 5 days or so to keep the contents aerated and to increase the speed of making the compost. You simply add to the contents as you need to and then, once full, keep tumbling it for a few weeks and hey presto! That, at least, is what the manufacturers claim. I shall look at whether the 2-3 weeks timespan is actually true in a little while.

Compost Bin Tumbler Reviews

I have been searching around to try to find urban compost tumbler reviews and the only place that has any in any number is Amazon. Just as well really, as they are by far the cheapest source if you are going to purchase one. As for so many things you really won't find cheaper products with better service. The most popular, probably because they are also the least expensive, is the Tumbleweed Composter in the US. What I am surprised about with all these composting tumblers is that they have so many good reviews.

If you are looking to buy one, I would certainly read through some of the reviews to get the one you think will be most suitable. The composting tumbler reviews on Amazon are very honest and you can certainly pick an urban compost tumbler easily after reading what people have to say.

The Best Urban Compost Tumbler?

As you know this is as much a journey for me as it is for you. I have been looking in to the world of the composting tumbler in an effort to see how they work and if it is suitable for me. So far I am both pleased with the prices, at least from Amazon, some other sites were extremely expensive. It seems you really should have a compost activator to aid the process, or at least add some soil, although it seems this may not be as effective. I have also learned that it is very simple to rotate the tumbling composter a few times a week to keep it working at the most efficient way it can.

But what are the best urban compost tumblers? I looked to see what is both the most popular and the best value. The Envirocycle Composter is a nice compact design and has FANTASTIC reviews. It also has the added bonus of making manure tea which is invaluable as a rich feed for plants and veggies of all kinds.

Next is the Achla CMP-05 Spinning Horizontal Composter. This spins on a horizontal axis so will take up a little more room but the Achla CMP-05 Spinning Horizontal Composter comes highly recommended. One owner was well on her way to having compost within a week by using it!

twin compost bin tumblerThere are many tumbling composters to choose from. There are the average family sized ones up to what seems like a great purchase if you are serious about making quality compost in larger bulk. The Mantis 4000-00-02 ComposT-Twin Composting Bin is a serious bit of kit indeed. This is more what I will be going for I think. Something a bit more expensive but a real quality design.

The Benefits Of A Twin Composting Bin

The Mantis 4000-00-02 ComposT-Twin Composting Bin is a dual chamber compost bin tumbler. For me this would be ideal. Here is what the product description says:
The Mantis Compost-Twin 2-chamber rotating composter is the composter's dream come true. Now you can "cook" one batch while you add organic scraps to another with no mess, no odors, and no hard work. It is built with a sturdy tubular frame and features fully enclosed chambers and four aerator vents. The easy-to-turn handle and gear system makes for easy mixing. The composter's chambers each have a 10-bushel capacity.

This is perfect. It means you can fill one chamber and start the final composting process without having to wait for it to finish composting before you can add anything else. It is more expensive but let me tell you a little story.

My Mother is an avid gardener but has never been a composter. I am always buying here an odd bag of gardening soil, or potting soil, on numerous occasions throughout the year. This year I said to her again, start composting properly or at least buy in some good soil or compost. What finally convinced her to start composting was when I added up the cost over a year of the bags of soil she had purchased. Try it for yourself, you will probably realize that an investment in an urban compost tumbler, even the dual chamber one, will fairly quickly pay for itself. If nothing else, get a smaller one and at least make some of your good quality soil.

Now, back to the most important qusetion when it comes to these compost bin tumbler mechanisms, but first don't forget to read about more benefits of the compost bin tumbler.

Can You Really Make Compost In 2-3 Weeks With A Tumbling Composter?

This to me is very important. If you get your composting tumbler from the cheapest source possible, which is via the links to the side, you are in for a rela treat.

All the information I could find leads me to believe it is possible. It seems 14 days may be pushing it a bit but, if done correctly, you can get good compost using an urban compost tumbler in about 21 days.

I have to say I am very impressed. Considering the time it take to make compost conventionally is about three months, these composting tumblers seem fantastic.

I really would recommend that you browse the urban compost tumbler reviews and choose the one most suitable for your needs. Don't forget my little story, if you buy in soil (ever) then you will save a lot of money in a year or two if you start making your own compost. If it only takes about three weeks as well, it sounds perfect.
