With so many different composters to choose from finding the best value composters can seem like a bit of a battle. It is extremely hard for people without the experience of using all the different makes and models to know just what will be the best one to choose.
Having spent many years trying out various forms of composting using a variety of different binds, containers, pallets etc I finally found what for many gardeners really is the absolute best value compost bins. The compost tumbler is by far the best possible way to make compost. It is super fast, very clean and without doubt the absolute best way to make quality compost in amazingly short periods of time.
Of course, they are by no means the cheapest way to make compost but because they make such good compost and do it so quickly they more than pay for themselves in a short space of time.
How?
Well, think about it. Nearly all of us as gardeners or vegetable growers will buy in soil for pots etc from a garden center or similar. These bags may not be expensive but the cost adds up over a few years. If you think about just how many of these or other things to improve soil that you have bought over the past few years you know that it actually adds up to quite a bit if money.
With a compost tumbler you can forget about ever having to buy in any soil for potting or to improve the ground. The compost tumbler makes quality compost in a matter of a few weeks so you always have a good steady supply of compost to use for whatever purpose you wish. Many people say that you need special soil for potting seedlings or for growing plants in containers but I disagree. I have been using my home made compost for years for growing plants in containers and it works exceptionally well. There is no need to ever buy soil again.
If you are not yet convinced then click on one of the composting tumbler images to the right and read all the compost reviews available. You will see just how efficient they are at making compost.
Advantages Of Compost Tumblers
The fact is that composting can be messy. If you have an open bin then animals are attracted and can make a real mess apart from being a nuisance in their own right. With a sealed container like a compost tumbler you do away with this problem. Normal barrels can become water logged and smelly and do not work very efficiently but a compost tumbler is different.
The contents do not become compacted and turn to sludge, it is well aerated and because of the tumbling action all the contents stay light and airy and never compact.
Apart from this we have the fact that as we turn the handle and rotate the contents we are evenly distributing the heat. This is always a problem with a conventional compost bin. We need to turn them manually if we want faster compost and for the compost to work evenly. With the compost tumbler you get perfect compost for everything that is in the drum. There are not any half composted pieces or anything like that, all of it composts the same and it is always a fine crumbly mix that you will never have seen the like of with traditional composting methods.
They really do have to be seen to be believed.
But the most important part is the fact that you can make compost in 2-3 weeks!
Unbelievable but true.

Buying Tumbler Compost Bins
After being finally convinced just how efficient tumbler compost bins are it is important to make the right purchase. There are urban compost tumblers for all budgets. For a look at reviews of the best you can read my compost tumbler review post. The tumbler compost bin is perfect for both urban and rural environments and choosing which one you will buy should be based on how it will be used. You certainly want to make a purchase that will suit how you compost and how much organic waste you produce.
See the review page just mentioned for what I believe is the best composter or if you have already done an awful lot of reading today then as far as I am concerned the best composter is the Achla cmp-05. I won't go in to all the reasons again but the fact that it is both cheap, has excellent reviews and it is horizontal means it is hard to beat. What this post is about is buying tumbler compost bins, and more importantly from where. It is not difficult to know where my loyalties lie but there is a very good reason for it. I have added links to my top pick because they are in my opinion the best source for compost tumblers. I have added the links so you can go straight to the products and make comparisons and shop in safety.
There are other places to make compost tumbler purchases but after I spent a lot of time looking ofr the best prices and the best selections I really only came up with this one place where you had lots of choice. Added to that they are the cheapest so there is no better place to buy. If you find one you like then buy it from them. Don't waste hours trying to find cheaper prices because you won't. I wouldn't recommend them if I thought there were better deals for people. A returns policy is also very important and I know from experience that theirs is the best.
My advice is find one you like and but it straight away. I often regret seeing something and then getting sidetracked. It means I put off what I could have done much quicker. If you want quick compost, which will happen with a tumbler compost bin then you need to actually have it before you can get started. Composting is such an important part of our life that I forget that some people are just starting down the road to making their own compost. There really is nothing like it. The sense of satisfaction at knowing you have turned what would have otherwise been thrown away in to something so healthy for the garden or veg plot is great. I love the fact I can make free compost from my waste. My advice, get started straight away. It is one purchase you will never regret. Making compost can become something of an obsession though so be careful not to bore your friends too much!
When buying tumbler compost bins make sure you follow some of the advice I have given here. If you don't want to read through the old posts then here is a quick recap:
Just ensure you buy a composting tumbler that is right for your needs. I recommend horizontal models as they are easier to turn. If you are strong or like a few minutes of physical work a few times a week then get a vertical model. A few people have mentioned that when the composting tumblers are quite full some are difficult to rotate. This is why I talk about the horizontal model so much. Personally I like exercise so it isn't a problem for me. Just choose what you think is better for the lifestyle you lead.
Tumbler compost bins are a great addition to the household. Just ensure you get one soon and start composting with passion.

When buying tumbler compost bins make sure you follow some of the advice I have given here. If you don't want to read through the old posts then here is a quick recap:
- Buy a dark color
- Get a horizontal model if you have a slight build or have plenty of space
- Get an activator if you want really fast results
- Get one large enough for your needs (or 2 cheap ones)
- Start composting asap
Just ensure you buy a composting tumbler that is right for your needs. I recommend horizontal models as they are easier to turn. If you are strong or like a few minutes of physical work a few times a week then get a vertical model. The Best Composters
Just recently I wrote about what I though was the best composter as far as urban compost bin tumblers are concerned and they without doubt are the best composters by a large margin. The post, entitled the best urban compost tumbler has got me to thinking a bit more about the best composter. I have always been a strict traditionalist when it comes to my composting. I make my composting bins out of whatever I can lay my hands on. Bits of wood, chicken wire etc, basically anything and everything. As we have an awful lot of land we also have room for a lot of compost bins. We add an awful lot of materials and need a lot of room while the organic matter turns in to a nice friable mix.
I know, however, that this is not everyones situation. Many people have a relatively small amount of land, or do not have masses of matter to compost. This is where the rotating compost bin comes in. I have already written about how quickly they will create compost, and also that they are a much tidier arrangement if you have to make compost where the composting bin can be seen. What I will touch on today is choosing the best composter out of the myriad different rotating compost bins that are available. Previously I wrote that as far as I am concerned the Achla CMP-05 Spinning Horizontal Composter is much better than the vertical units because it will be much easier to spin. It is also very competitively priced and is the best selling urban compost tumbler on Amazon. Lets look at what else would make the best composter.
The Best Composter
So, I already stated that for a good price the Achla is my choice. The fact that it is horizontal simply makes it easier to use if you are of a slight build or worry about turning a composting tumbler as it gets full. There are a few other reasons why this seems like such a good tumbling composter but it applies to others as well. That is the color.
If you can, especially in cooler climates, try to get a composter that is black. This color will absorb the heat from the sun and will aid the composting process. This extra heat will do nothing but good. If you do get a black compost bin tumbler I would ensure that you keep the contents moist. You may find out that the extra heat will mean it dries out a little more quickly inside. Just check on it regularly, maybe as you are about to rotate it to churn up the contents. It is a simple matter of adding a little extra water, or, my preference is to add some of the water that you wash the dishes with. This way you will save water and be adding the nutritious contents that come of the dirty dishes to your composter.
The best composters will always be a dark color if possible, dark green or black is always preferable over a light color, and if it may be difficult for you to turn a vertical urban compost tumbler, try a horizontal one for ease of use.
