The Achla, the compost tumbler in the image above is by far my favorite. The fact that it is a horizontal model makes it about the best model to use in my opinion and it involves basically no manual labor to turn the drum and mix up the contents.
Many of the upright models are very easy to use and work simply via a turn of the handle to invert them to get the compost tumbler activated and working at optimal efficiency. A few others can be difficult to use however. This is why I favor the horizontal model, especially the Achla model.
If you have the space I would certainly recommend that you buy it.
The compost tumbler works on a fairly basic theory but it is one that can give you a fine and very high quality compost in a matter of weeks. Basically you add good quality organic matter, whatever you can find. You then regularly turn the handle to "tumble" the contents.
It is this "tumbling" that is at the heart of ensuring that you get compost in record time. The mixing of the contents chops it all up in to very fine pieces. This allows it to compost at an astonishing rate as each tome you perform this action you are making everything smaller.
As well as that it means that there are no cold or overly hot spots. In conventional compost heaps we are left with good compost in the center after a few months but the edges are never usable. The compost tumbler ensure that all the contents come out at the same grade and the ensure bin can then be used straight away if you so wish.
All in all it is a marvelous invention and if you want to make compost in the most efficient manner and without problems such as smells or an untidy heap then it is about the best gift a gardener could ever have.
